MAGBO’s Referee Education and Fundamentals (R.E.F.) Course is an intensive 8-week program, designed to provide an in-depth study of the rules, mechanics, and philosophies specifically geared to officiating of women’s basketball. This is an extension of MAGBO’s Basketball Officiating Proficiency Course, expanding upon the concepts and content at a higher level.

The course centers around engaged, active, student-centered learning. Breakdown of game video and e-learning modules will be used. Our experienced instructors will focus on the most current NCAA playing rules and mechanics, giving participants the opportunity to apply these principles on the court. At the conclusion of this course, all participants will be given a two-part assessment covering rules knowledge and mechanics. Those officials who demonstrate proficiency will be put in touch with local assignors and leagues, fostering an opportunity for further officiating experience.

Your registration fee of $250 will include all course materials, course assessment and approval category, 2019-2021 NCAA Women’s Basketball Rulebook and 2019-2021 Casebook, MAGBO Mechanics Illustrated Manual, National Association of Sports Officials (NASO) membership and personal liability insurance, REFEREE Magazine, zooom video technology officiating account, on-court instruction, observer feedback, and MAGBO Fox 40 Whistle. This is an extension of MAGBO’s Basketball Officiating Proficiency Course, expanding upon the concepts and content at a higher level.

The Course.

Upon Completion.

Upon completion of the course, all participants will be given a two-part assessment covering rules knowledge and mechanics application. Those officials who demonstrate proficiency will become approved MAGBO officials. Approved MAGBO officials will have the opportunity to meet high school assignors in the New York Metro area fostering an opportunity for further officiating experience. Floor work and assessment dates will be provided.

anticipated outcomes

• To learn the NCAA Women’s basketball rules and mechanics in a practical manner.
• To demonstrate skills and problem solving techniques while officiating.
• To obtain a collection of various print and online material which will assist in the participant’s continuing education as a basketball official.
• To establish and sustain a regular practice of reviewing officiating techniques, current issues and trends in officiating, and study of officiating subject matter through use of the participant’s membership with NASO Through MAGBO.
• To apply mindfulness strategies while working with student athletes and coaches.
