Metropolitan Approved Girls Basketball Officials

Basketball Officiating Basics Class

When it comes to learning the basics, or expanding the knowledge and skills of women’s basketball officials, no one does it better than the Metropolitan Approved Girls Basketball Officials (MAGBO), an officiating support organization serving the New York Metro area.

Are you new to officiating or do you want to improve your current skills? Then come to MAGBO's Basketball Officiating Basics (B.O.B.) Class. The Basketball Officiating Basics (B.O.B.) Class is an eight-week classroom and on-court experience that introduces those interested in officiating girls’/women’s basketball to the rules, mechanics, and philosophy of basketball officiating.

MAGBO’s Basketball Officiating Basics Class is designed for:

  • Anyone interested in becoming an official.

  • Current officials with a few years experience who       desire to increase their knowledge base related to       rules and floor mechanics.

  • Officials who will move on to educational and       try-out/improvement camps.

  • Anyone interested in learning the rules of       basketball.

  • This is a great opportunity to learn the rules of the game, as well as officiating mechanics, in a low-pressure environment with support provided by the instructors and guest speakers. Led by Helene Hamilton and Kerry Donohue, both high school and collegiate level officials and clinicians, attendees will have an opportunity to learn the basic foundation, theories, and rules necessary to be an effective official.

Other topics to be discussed include: Beginning your officiating career, the business of officiating and connecting with key leaders and guest speakers. All will lead to gaining experience by officiating entry-level games in the spring and summer. All students will be matched up with an experienced mentor who will help you learn the ins and outs of becoming a basketball official.

Cost for the class will be $65 which includes all materials including rule books, manuals, handouts, quizzes and game tape breakdown.

Class will take place at Queensborough Community College on the following eight (8) Tuesdays:
    February 28; March 7, 14, 21, 28; April 4, 25, May 2 from 6:00PM to 8:00PM.
